TAMARIND

      The Tamarind tree (Tamarindus indica), an evergreen tree of the legume family (Fabaceae) native to tropical Africa, is widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions for its edible bitter fruit. It is widely used in food, beverage and traditional medicine. This plant is especially common in the Indian subcontinent, Central America and Mexico and is a common ingredient in the cuisines of these regions. The tree is also grown as decorative, wood is used for carpentry work.

 

Description : 

     The tree grows to about 24 meters (80 feet) in height and has needle-like compound leaves (feathers) interspersed with leaflets about 2 centimeters (0.75 inches) long. The yellow flowers grow in small clusters. The fruit is leguminous. 3 to 9 inches (7.5 to 24 cm) closed; Contains 1 to 12 large flat seeds in soft brown flesh.
